I'm not a first time home buyer by any means, but when I decided after paying rent for the last three years it was time for me to find a real home. The first step to looking for a home is pre-qualified, which saved me time to search for homes that fit within the pre-qualified price range, from the lender. At first, I thought this would turn in into a pipe dream, but I was wrong. It's exciting to know where you stand according to your income, assets, and debts that are figured that be helpful to you and the lender. Veterans United Home Loans was a disappointing experience for me as a self-employed veteran. I went through the effort of providing every document on their checklist only to find their underwriters completely mishandled my tax returns. They counted my truck mileage DEDUCTION not an EXPENSE against my income, which is not how business finances work… and it showed a clear lack of understanding of self-employment. The process wasted time and made it clear they are not business-owner friendly, despite marketing to veterans. I will continue to warn other service members of this potential scam.

⭐☆☆☆☆ Veterans United talks a big game about “serving those who served,” but what I got was highway robbery dressed up as patriotism. They stuck me with an outrageous 7%+ interest rate, demanded a $12,000 down payment, and then tried to pull the ultimate scam—charging a secondary closing fee for an IRRRL, which is supposed to be a streamlined, low-cost refinance. To add insult, they wanted me to pay for a second title search on the same property. That’s not service. That’s predatory lending with a flag sticker slapped on top. Veterans deserve honesty and fair treatment, not hidden fees and bait-and-switch tactics. If you’re a veteran looking to refinance, protect yourself and look somewhere else—because this outfit is more interested in your wallet than your service.

The entire staff made us feel like family! Walked us through a challenging process of securing a house like I was a wayward nephew they were welcoming home. Won't go through anyone else when I decide to upgrade in the future, and they all have my continuing gratitude and admiration.
