From the small town of Hodonín in Moravia to the bustling streets of early 1900s New York, this is the incredible journey of my great-grandmother's mother, Anna Gazda. Born as Anna Gazdová on May 8, 1881, in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire (now the Czech Republic), she was the daughter of Jan Gazda and Aloisie Kocisová. Hodonín, known for its industrial growth, was supported by sugar factories and brickworks, providing vital employment to the local community. At 19, Anna became a mother to her daughter, Marie, in February 1901. As a single mother in a small industrial town, she faced significant societal pressures.
