HDC MidAtlantic

HDC has recently developed a living space in my neighborhood. They have completely neglected to maintain their new property’s sidewalks in the most recent snow and ice storm, causing considerable inhibition to movement of pedestrians in the area, which includes the elderly, the disabled, young children, and students of all ages. Their sidewalk remains untouched for 17 days now since the winter storm. This is a very negative first impression and extremely unneighborly from HDC. Edit: Instead of replying to this review, just clean the dang sidewalk on the rear of your college ave building and I will delete this!!

I highly recommend Umbrella Works Apartments, the location is convenient to the downtown area, market and restaurants. I made alot of friends while residing at Unbrella Works. The activities were amazing, holiday luncheon, picnics, yard sale and bingo. The staff is incredibly helpful, respectful, friendly and caring. I have recommended my friends to live at Umbrella Works.

HDC MidAtlantic presents itself as a nonprofit committed to affordable housing and community. Unfortunately, my family’s experience — and what I’ve since seen echoed online by others — tells a very different story. On October 9, 2025, my disabled, senior mother was encouraged by HDC’s community manager, Lisa Varley-Wacker, to apply for a wheelchair-accessible apartment at their South Side Lofts property in Bethlehem. She was told a unit was available right now. We applied the same day and paid the fee. For nearly three weeks, there was no communication — no calls, no emails, no updates. Only after I escalated directly to Dana Hanchin (President & CEO) did we receive a response. Shortly afterward, Lisa called to say that there were no available apartments and that my mother would be place

Lily has been a huge help during this long process of getting my mom her own apartment. The building is clean, updated and everyone is sweet!

I've been a resident at Umbrella Works for 31 years, I enjoy living at the property. I have a beautiful apartment, very spacious, high ceilings. The staff does an amazing job with maintenance and office information.
